To keep our readers up to date on the latest news, we’ve rounded up this weeks’ top gaming articles (listed below), for your viewing pleasure. These include the latest releases, downloadable content on existing games and recent developments on long awaited titles.
1. ARMS Direct
ARMS direct this week started off with a funny intro on the history of arms, integrating the extendible ARMS into a human like world. The ARMS 101 is actually quite handy as a tutorial pre-release, discussing the different ARMS weights and attributes creating interesting mechanics and fun gameplay.
In addition to these handy tips and little tidbits to get us even more excited for the game, there are in-depth profiles on fighters, different ARMS and game styles (including my favourite, Hoops). To find out more, watch ARMS Direct below:
2. Far Cry 5
have announced Far Cry 5! The long awaited sequel to the anthology (not counting Far Cry Primal, because who does…) has been officially announced and is coming in the next year
There aren’t many more notes, but the official announcement is exciting enough and with E3 around the corner who knows how much we will learn.
There are rumours that Far Cry 5 will be set as a western
but time will tell.
3. Devolver Digital Weekend Steam Sale
As usual, the Steam store is having another publisher weekend where all of the publisher’s games are heavily discounted. This week it’s Devolver Digital, and we’ve highlighted some great deals below:
4. Overwatch Almost One Year Old
The globally popular first person shooter game Overwatch is turning one year old next week; to celebrate this, the developers at Blizzard are hosting an event to mark this anniversary, running from May 23rd to June 12th. Since the Game’s initial launch last year, the FPS has been well received, with Blizzard supplying an extensive number of updates and downloadable content (including additional character skins, new maps and limited time events). Essentially, this is a marketing ploy to keep interest high from its consumers, which appears to be paying off as IGN
had posted an article last month which confirms that Overwatch has reached over 30 million registered players.
To fall in line with the one year anniversary, the studio is also releasing a ‘Game of the Year’ edition of the game, available on the PC, Xbox and PlayStation; the edition provides the gamer with 10 bonus Loot Boxes, extra skins and various virtual content for other Blizzard titles. As noted by Euro Gamer, Overwatch will also be free play for a limited time, from the 26th – 29th May; the user will be able to retain their progress data from the trial, should they decide to buy the game later on.
5. Law Breakers Beta Now Live
The Gravity defying PvP Law Breakers
has launched its closed beta, which is available to individuals who have access to the beta key and hardware from the 18th – 21st May; this is perfect for those who want to binge play the game over the weekend. For the ill informed, LawBreakers is an upcoming action packed first-person-shooter game developed Boss Key Productions. Even the laws of physics don’t apply to you as you traverse the environment, creating an unprecedented gravity-based combat system.
Check out the trailer below:
As you can see the, the PvP fighting style is fast paced and very unforgiving. As accustomed to players of this genre, you can alternate between an extensive range of weaponry to suit the combat requirement; this ranges from melee based tools to projectiles that come in all shapes and sizes. The environment resembles Mass Effect: Andromeda, with emphasis on first person view; one significant distinction is your ability to freely and quickly move throughout the map using a variety of different devices.
Grab your your beta key while you can.
6. Guerrilla Games announces work on Horizon DLC
Horizon Zero Dawn has been regarded as one of the top ranking games of the year and as one of the best PlayStation exclusives to date. With Guerrilla Games revolutionising the creation of expansive and immersive environments through their custom built Decima engine, we’ll likely see contributions from this technology towards the development of future games. As reported by Gamasutra
, Horizon has now sold over 2.6 millions units, an impressive feet given that the game was only launched back in February.
However, as confirmed by Guerrilla Managing Director Hermen Hulst, it appears that “This is only the beginning of Aloy’s story and our exploration of the world of Horizon Zero Dawn, with the team already hard at work on an expansion to the story.” This is great news to gamers like myself, who have played this beautifully written story; will this additional content further elaborate of the precursor civilisation or will it take place after the events of the game and take us to a new location, going beyond the territory of the map. Not much information has been disclosed as of yet, though we’ll keep you posted as more information becomes available.
7. Destiny 2 Gameplay Footage
Bungie have released a gameplay footage trailer, which you can watch below, as well as a full gameplay livestream
. With a release date of the 8th of September, Destiny 2 is looking to be focused on console support on release, with PC support coming a little later.
Gamer’s who pre-order the game will gain early access to the beta runs, most likely beginning this summer.
8. Injustice 2 is Out!
After a long wait, from the release of Injustice: Gods Among Us back in 2013, Injustice 2 has finally landed. Get back into the DC universe and play as your favourite character in a battle for the ages. The significant technological developments in gaming hardware are apparent, as some characters border on the line of photorealism in their presentation. This new game might just give Mortal Kombat a run for it’s money.
