Great news fellow gamers!
IO Interactive, the creators of the popular game Hitman is now an independent studio, separate from parent company Square Enix.
The state of IO Interactive after their publicised breakup with Square Enix has been a focal point within the gaming industry. As stated in one of our previous posts, Square Enix was initially attempting to sell off the studio to potential investors.
Back in May, Square Enix released the following statement to investors “To maximise player satisfaction as well as market potential going forward, we are focusing our resources and energies on key franchises and studios. As a result, the Company has regrettably decided to withdraw from the business of IO INTERACTIVE A/S, a wholly‐owned subsidiary and a Danish corporation, as of March 31, 2017”. Provided with this information, the future of the studio remained uncertain until a most recent development.
IO Interative CEO Hakan Abrak stated that they have successfully concluded negotiations with Square Enix and have agreed to a management buyout, with exclusive rights to the Hitman IP. This comes as great news for the gaming community, as not only will the studio continue to produce great games, but the story of Agent 47 will also continue. Hakan noted in his statement that “IOI started as an independent studio and we will now return to those roots with an extremely passionate and talented team.”.
The validity of this information has yet to be verified, though according to Gamestar, the second season of Hitman is already halfway to completion. This information apparently comes from a reliable source close to Gamestar, so take it with a pinch of salt, though even so, this bods well for the future of Agent 47.
