As part of our 8-bits of news, today we discuss DLC rumours, new playable characters and an interesting Middle-Earth update.
1. Middle-earth: Shadow of War Nemesis Forge
It’s been years since the world was astounded by Shadow or Mordor’s incredible Nemesis system, and whilst many thought it would be a game changer, we haven’t seen it and any other similar mechanics appear in any other AAA games since.
As we all know, Shadow of War is coming this year, and finally a new game, despite being in the same franchise, will feature the much beloved Nemesis system. Now whilst that is good enough for most of us, Warner Bros Games has gone and announced a new update for Shadow of Mordor, called the Nemesis Forge.
What this new feature allows you to do is to import your worst enemies and best allies across from Shadow of Mordor into Shadow of War, once the game has been released. The game will automatically find your highest ranked Nemesis and loyalist ally and make them available to import into the game.
In addition to this new update, the game is now free to play until July 9th and is on sale for as little as £3.20 for the game of the year addition on steam until July 10th.
2. Scott Cawthon Ceases Work On 6th Iteration of Five Nights at Freddy’s
Sadly, Scott Cawthon, the creator of the highly successful and heart attack inducing franchise Five Nights at Freddy’s has announced that he has ceased working on the 6th iteration of the game, which was to follow the latest release, Five Nights at Freddy’s: Sister Location.
Cawthon says “With each game’s release, I think the expectations get higher and higher for the next, and rightfully so. Each game SHOULD be better than the last! But that pressure starts to mount” and that he “fears that he’s been neglecting other things in his life” in an update on steam.
However, he states he is not abandoning making games or the franchise itself, stating he just wants to “get back to what made game-making enjoyable in the first place.” He wants a more relaxed approach to making games, and considering saying Five Nights at Freddy’s gets my heart going, I can’t imagine what making 5 of those games is like. We wish Scott Cawthon all the best in his future endeavours and hope he can find the joy in what he does again, be it the end of the franchise or not.
3. Injustice 2 Adds New Characters To Its Roster
In addition to the playable character Red Hood, added to the super hero/villain lineup as part of the Fighter Pack 1 DLC on the 13th June, another character is set to join the ranks; This time its from the Mortal Kombat universe.
Mortal Kombat veteran Sub-Zero is set to join the roster with a confirmed 11th July release date. So far Injustice 2 includes over 28 playable characters, with its PVP aspect being the main focal point for hardcore players. However, the developers aren’t shy about doing crossovers from other flagship franchises; the most notable being the playable Scorpion character from the previous Injustice instalment.
Netherrealm Studios have already released a trailer depicting this new addition, with Injustice 2 set to include more crossover characters down the line. It looks like lightning god Raiden is set to be included, as indicated by the character roster displaying his silhouetted likness.
In relation to the Fighter DLC 1 Pack (which emulates the content structure of the first game) only one more character is definitely set to make the fold after sub-zero, Starfire. Details regarding her specs and abilities have yet to be disclosed, though we’ll keep you posted once we know more.
4. Horizon: Zero Dawn DLC: What We Know So Far
Sony recently disclosed some substantial information about the DLC for top ranking game of the year Horizon: Zero Dawn. Guerrilla Games released a trailer for this content, titled ‘The Frozen Wilds’ during the E3 conference.
According to GamesRadar, the location in the trailer may well be based upon Yellowstone National Park. This comparison comes from the artwork depicting similar wildlife and geothermal features. The location in which the expansion takes place is said to be Ban-Ur, the nomadic homeland of the Banuk, situated to the north of the Sacred Lands and the Sundom. This location is referenced several times throughout the campaign.
GamesRader also believes that the DLC with include new mechanical archetypes for Aloy to fight, the most notable being a robotic gorilla or bear, though it’s difficult to discern the exact species of this new creature due to its ambiguous features. A specific date for the DLC has yet to be announce, though Sony have given us a rough ballpark of Fall 2017.
I know i’ll certainly be playing the main campaign again once the DLC is out, though in the meantime, looks like we’ll have to play the waiting game.
5. PS5 Confirmed To Be In The Works
During an interview with a German website golem.de it was definitively confirmed by Sony exec Shawn Layden that Sony are currently working on their next generation console for their PlaySation line.
Rumours were already circulating that Sony was hoping to break away from the conventional console release model, with the objective of having regular hardware updates (similar to typical smartphones). However Layden dispelled those rumour during the discussion, stating that the PS5 ‘is coming”, though it will “probably be some time”.
These comments came in response to a rumour (by an industry expert) which suggested that Sony were set to release the new hardware in the middle of 2018.
With the PS3 seven years old when it was replaced by the PS4, and with the PS4 only turning four in November, it may be some time before we see the next generation of the PlayStation range. However, with it confirmed that it’s already being worked on, we can expect great things. Additionally, with the source of the rumour being relatively reliable, it’s not impossible that Sony aim to do something unprecedented.
Only time will tell.
6. Kingdom Hearts III Set To Visit Treasure Planet
Speculations have been circulating, commenting on what new worlds are set to make the lineup for the next instalment of the Kingdom Hearts series. According the Hofmag, this will include the early 00’s feature length film Treasure Planet. Although the film was generally well received, its performance was relatively poor in the US box office upon release. However, this may be an interesting direction for the franchise to take, especially with the KH title ‘Dream Drop Distance’ initially set to feature this world in its roster.
On the other hand, KH fans want Moana to make an appearance, with Reddit user Nogrogg commenting on how the semiotics of the first game emulate the plot structure of the Disney film. In this comment, he brilliantly stated that “It’s literally about darkness taking over a tropical island due to the heart of the world being stolen”. For diehard fans, this obviously relates to the how Sora was initially introduces in his homeland ‘Destiny Islands’.
According to Isports Times, Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda recently stated that the game will launch “in the next three years or so”. Although this comes as no surprise, this unfortunately means we could be waiting even longer to play the next game. However, last month’s E3 trailer stated that we can expect to know more on the 15th July at the D23 Expo. With that in mind, we should know a lot more in a little over a week from now, so we’ll keep you posted on these developments.
7. Blizzard Introduces New Overwatch Hero: Doomfist
Overwatch is still in the top of the headlines, and for good reason too. The fast-paced Disney-like PvP shooter has introduced yet another new hero (or villain), Doomfist. Armed with a cybernetic fist, this muscle clad re-imagination of Terry Crews is an intimidating guy, giving Reaper a run for his money.
This brings the number of playable characters to 25 heroes in the Overwatch army, and this is the first male addition to the original cast. Hopefully this implies we will see more male additions to Overwatch’s heroes in the next year, and hopefully even more immersive and detailed lore we’re so used to from Overwatch. Read more about Doomfist in our article about the new hero here and watch the origin story for Doomfist below:
8. Free New Playable ARMS character Max Brass aka ‘The Commish’
The innovative PvP game for the Nintendo Switch, ARMS, is introducing it’s first new playable character Max Brass aka ‘The Commish’ who features new whack-a-mole-esque hammer arms to the fight. Of course, Max Brass is already in the game as a kind of boss-battle, but now he will be a playable character in the game itself; how this will tip the balance of characters, we will have to wait and see.
This brings the number of playable characters up to 11; watch the launch trailer below and get ready to play Max Brass when the free update goes live on July 12th.
Which of the new characters are you looking forward to playing the most? Will you be importing your Shadow of Mordor enemies to Shadow of War? Share you thoughts @JenChauMedia.
