The answer is yes!
As reported by Entertainment Weekly, the popular dystonia series is being adapted into a TV show. Starz, the TV network behind American Gods and Outlander is currently in the early stages of adapting ‘Accendant’, the fourth and final instalment of the franchise.
The first of a two part finale (titled Divergient: Allegiant) premiered lasts year, though performed poorly in the box office.
Initially, the studio confirmed that Ascendant would continue to move forward as a theatrical project with Shailene Woodley and Theo James set to reprise their roles, though as they moved into a different direction, this brought into question whether the original cast will be returning. Were the series to continue on the big screen, the main cast would be contractually obligated to appear on all four movies; as this is no longer the case, they aren’t required to continue with this project.
Unfortunately, many of the main cast have already voiced concerns about the transition to the small screen, with Shailene Woodley making it openly clear that she has no interest in playing Tris on TV, stating:
“Out of respect to the studio and everyone involved, they may have changed their mind and may be doing something different, but I’m not necessarily interested in doing a television show.”
Co-star Theo James (Four) voiced similar concerns during an interview with TooFab last year, stating
“I think it’s a shame that we can’t finish the story but I think it’s evolving in a place where the actors that have been in the three movies probably won’t be in whatever it evolves to in the future.”
So far, it’s been confirmed that writing duties will fall to Adam Cozad, behind The Legend of Tarzan, while The Age of Adaline’s Lee Toland Krieger is set to produce. Both were brought in while Accendant was still being pitched as a film;
With it highly unlikely that we’ll see any of the original actors, we may yet see that studio reboot with a new cast to wrap up the story or maybe even write some of the characters out of the script. At the moment, this is mere speculation, though with the future of the Divergent series in limbo for the past year, who knows what direction they will go in next.
Will the Divergent series be the same without the main cast? Are you going to be watching the final instalment? Share your thoughts on our twitter page @JenChauMedia.
